CLINICAL SUPERVISION

Supervision

Supervision, Groups &
Mentoring

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Registered Play Therapist and an Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). This means that I am a LMFT who is a Clinical Fellow of AAMFT and meet the requirements for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation.

I provide Clinical Supervision to individuals who are seeking licensure as an MFTs.

I have completed the 30 contact hour course in Marriage and Family Therapy Supervision Fundamentals which included both interactional and didactic instructional methods. I completed this at the AAMFT Institutes. I also met the requirement to write a Philosophy of Supervision paper which was reviewed by the course instructor and the Approved Supervisor mentor.

Supervision will meet the following guidelines, according to AAMFT website:
  • Face-to-face conversation between the MFT/MFT trainee and the supervisor, usually in periods of approximately one hour each.
  • The learning process should be sustained and intense.
  • Appointments are customarily scheduled once a week, three times weekly is ordinarily the maximum and once every other week the minimum.
  • Supervision focuses on raw data from a MFT’s/trainee’s continuing clinical practice, which is available to the supervisor through a combination of direct live observation, co-therapy, written clinical notes, audio and video recordings, and live supervision.
  • It is a process clearly distinguishable from personal psychotherapy and is contracted in order to serve professional goals.
  • It is normally completed over a period of one to three years.
Diversity and social justice will many times be weaved into the conversation. I believe that it is important that families (clients) be viewed in the wider context of their environments, including social, political, economical and cultural realities. I value the unique values and perspectives that supervisees bring to supervision.

Individual Supervision

LMFT

Sometimes a fully licensed therapist may seek out clinical supervision for consultation purposes, or many times to explore their own self-of-the therapist issues that may be impacting their sessions. I love to work with LMFTs in supporting them on their professional path. I am also an AAMFT Approved Mentor, for therapists who are on the track for the AAMFT Supervision designation.

LMFTA

I provide guidance in the process of becoming fully licensed, and am well acquainted with the requirements according to the state Licensure Board. Using my naturally structured approach, I am able to help LMFTAs create an organized and focused plan for accruing their hours. My high sense of empathy helps to create a supportive relationship between the supervisee and supervisor that enables the development of initiative, self-confidence and risk-taking. LMFTAs learn more about their professional identity.

Supervision Sessions

Individual supervision will normally occur once per week for one hour. Both supervisor and supervisee will provide at least 24-hour notice if they are unable to meet.

Ethical Guidelines

The most current American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Code of Ethics will guide the conduct of the supervisor and supervisee. This applies regardless of supervision affiliation with AAMFT or with other professional organizations.

Supervisor Responsibilities

  • I am committed to providing an atmosphere of trust, collegiality, and encouragement for the supervisee’s professional growth.
  • I will provide honest feedback that will indicate growth areas for the supervisee and ensure adequate time is provided to make appropriate improvements.
  • I will allow the supervisee to work within his/her own counseling model and will provide supervision in accordance with that model(s).
  • I will be available for emergency contact by the supervisee.
  • I will provide documentation of licensure and supervisor credentials at the supervisee’s request.
  • I will complete all forms and documentation required for the supervisee’s effort to become licensed.

Supervisee Responsibilities

  • The supervisee will be prepared for case presentations and supervision sessions.
  • The supervisee will be open to feedback, and will apply him/herself to professional development.
  • The supervisee will provide documentation of licensure, liability insurance, and any credentials at the supervisor’s request.
  • The supervisee will clearly state his/her supervision goals and any professional credentials being pursued.

There is an initial screening to evaluate the MFT’s/MFT trainee’s knowledge of systems theory, family development, special family issues, gender and cultural issues, systemic approaches and interventions, human development, human sexuality, and ethical responsibilities.

Clinical Supervision Testimonials

"Sarah has been an incredible supervisor. I have grown tremendously under her supervision as she has been an excellent listener and is very encouraging and validating. She has helped me stretch my professional insights by providing additional links to articles, theories, books and websites to help me continue to grow my skills. She is responsive and provides helpful feedback regarding my strengths and opportunities. It is clear that she wants the best for her students. She is dedicated, warm, caring and inspirational. I am extremely grateful to have been able to learn from her wisdom and kindness. Thank you Sarah."

Sabrina H. MFT Intern, 2020

"It was truly a pleasure to work with Sarah Harris and Serenity and Grace Therapeutic Services. Her level of professionalism and understanding is unparalleled. She clearly has a passion for mentoring and encouraging students, interns, and therapeutic professionals. Her level of knowledge, insight, and experience is a gift which she willing shares with others. She provides a warm and inviting environment, and it was a joy to be a part of her work. She both challenges and supports you, offering guidance and professional insight. Her ability to work with a wide variety of presenting issues and clients is a testament to her abilities. She challenged my preconceive notions of telehealth, and has made me a believer. I am forever appreciative and grateful for the opportunities she had provided."

AS, MFT Intern, 2020

"While my experience at Serenity and Grace was only once per week as a supplemental site, I received countless educational rewards. Sarah was a fountain of information, helping me adjust to working with an unfamiliar client population and the external systems they were connected to. Sarah taught me the importance of setting boundaries with clients while simultaneously showing compassion. Since her setting was more of a fast-paced environment, I learned the importance of time management by utilizing every minute, both during and in-between sessions, to get things done. She continuously provided constructive feedback with client documentation and introduced me to the experience of thorough client intake procedures. Sarah also challenged me to think about how even a clinician's comments and gestures may influence the client, helping me understand even the subtle ways that a clinician is responsible for the client's needs and well-being.

Overall, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn and grow under Sarah's leadership."

Shantell Carraway, MFT Intern, 2019

"I feel extremely fortunate to have been chosen by Sarah to be her intern. Sarah understands that developing an identity as a therapist is a personal journey for each intern, so her supervision is tailored to specific needs and goals of the intern. She allowed me an incredible amount of freedom to discover the therapeutic styles that fit with my identity and, at the same time, she provided me with just enough guidance to continue to grow.

Sarah excels as a teacher and continuously provided opportunities for me to learn far beyond therapeutic techniques and clinical treatment. Sarah also welcomed any new information I brought to her. Whether it was intervention techniques, book/article recommendations, etc., Sarah genuinely enjoyed collaborating and made me feel like an important part of her practice. I feel very prepared to begin my career as a Marriage and Family Therapist after my internship here at Serenity and Grace."

Andrew Mocete, MFT Intern, 2019

"The opportunity to complete my clinical requirements at Serenity & Grace Therapeutic Services, under the supervision of Sarah Harris, LMFT, RPT was an invaluable experience. As a fieldwork site, this practice is thriving and offered no shortage of direct client hours, through co-therapy and by developing my own caseload. Serenity & Grace is a collaborative environment, with shared resources, staff meetings and opportunities to participate in several types of groups as a co-facilitator. Additionally, being a Registered Play Therapist, Sarah Harris was a highly professional and dedicated mentor as I developed therapeutic skills working with children and adolescents. The monthly bibliotherapy program that Ms. Harris employs, ‘Book of the Month’, helped expose me to resources directly related to my work with clients. Moreover, Ms. Harris was consistently available to support my growth as a future MFT, providing guidance on anything from ethical questions and engaging therapeutically with clients to the logistics of running a therapeutic practice. I would highly recommend the supervision services available at Serenity & Grace with Sarah Harris to any future professional.

Kate Floren, MFT Intern, 2019

"It was truly a pleasure to work under the guidance, support, leadership and supervision of Sarah Harris at Serenity & Grace Therapeutic Services. Mrs. Harris offers an environment where hands on learning is implemented and Mrs. Harris trust and respect the learning styles of her interns-in- training, she is there to lead and guide her interns in training, every step of the way throughout their internship process.

Mrs. Harris offered several opportunities for interns to learn and grow as an inter-in-training, through webinars and the book of the month. Mrs. Harris has a wealth of knowledge, that she happily shares that continues to be beneficial throughout my learning journey. Mrs. Harris provided several opportunities for inters to work with diverse populations. Mrs. Harris went above and beyond to assist her interns with meeting the necessary requirements for their internship program.

Mrs. Harris provides weekly supervision in order to support the needs of the interns in training. Mrs. Harris cultivated an atmosphere of learning at Serenity & Grace Therapeutic Services and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to work under an amazing Supervisor and Therapist."

La-Tasha M., Northcentral University (NCU) '18

"My experience under Sarah’s supervision was fantastic! I highly recommend Sarah as a supervisor. In fact, I have recommended her to several of the individuals I know looking for a fieldwork site. Throughout my internship, Sarah was always available to answer any pending questions that I had and I had MANY. She challenged my knowledge of different systemic models; making sure that I could recognize interventions from each and how or when to apply them.

Sarah displayed her knowledge of those different models in every session that I was able to observe. Sarah’s experience as a registered play therapist not only sparked my interest in working with children, but provided knowledge and resources that I did not have. One of the highlights of supervision was our “book of the month.” This process started building my professional library. This was just another example of Sarah pushing me to learn more and apply what was learned.

Sarah models the foundation, principles and theory of an adequate marriage and family therapist and I am grateful for her example as that has helped me professionally. I gained a ton of experience being supervised by Sarah. I could not be more thankful that she chose me as an intern. Thank you Sarah!!"

Shantel H., MFT Intern, 2017

"Sarah is a wonderful supervisor. Throughout my internship with Sarah, I have been able to receive much support and helpful feedback which has been critical to my professional and personal growth. Sarah challenged me to be become an effective play therapist by providing resources, her expertise, and her perspective. Sarah is always open to answering any questions.

I enjoy being able to have frank conversations with her and being comfortable enough with her to do so. I believe this one of the aspects of my supervision with Sarah that have aided in my growth as a therapist. Thank you soooo much!"

Talisha T., MFT Intern, 2016

"I would highly recommend Sarah as a supervisor! She is a great balance between challenging and supportive; she pushes you to be your best, while being approachable and encouraging. She demonstrates and teaches from a systemic perspective and truly exhibits a marriage and family therapist by employing the principles and theory that set us apart from other mental health professionals. She helped me develop professionally and I appreciated her ability to be both directive and open to my suggestions and therapeutic style.

In addition, I would highly recommend Sarah’s practice as a field placement if given the opportunity. I gained a lot of experience and knowledge by observing Sarah as a therapist, doing co-therapy, and having the chance to maintain my own caseload under her supervision. Not to mention, her experience as a registered play therapist that sparked a new interest in my own practice!"
